In 1971, the Jackson State University Marching Band became the "Sonic Boom of the South"—a name inspired by the band members themselves. The foundation for the band's distinctive style was laid earlier, in 1948, when William W. Davis became its first full-time director. Having played trumpet in Cab Calloway's band, Davis brought the showmanship and musical flair from Calloway’s influence, shaping the Sonic Boom into the powerhouse it is today.
