Founded in 1891 as the West Virginia Colored Institute, WVSU was established to provide African American students access to higher education in one of the few states that still maintained segregated schools. As one of the few HBCUs created to serve Black students exclusively, its founding was a pivotal step toward advancing equity and opportunity.
