North Carolina Central University (NCCU) was founded in 1910 by Dr. James E. Shepard as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua. It became the first state-supported liberal arts college for African Americans in the United States in 1925. Today, NCCU continues to serve as a leader in higher education, known for its strong programs in law, business, and the sciences, as well as its commitment to public service.
