HBCU alum are making history!

In case you missed it, costume designer Ruth E. Carter just became the first Black woman to win two Oscars! It’s no surprise that the first Black woman to accomplish such an honor is an HBCU graduate and an alumna of the highly acclaimed Hampton University. Watch her inspiring acceptance speech here.

 

What an Achievement

The designer, who graduated from Hampton University in 1982, won the Best Costume Design award at the 95th Academy Awards for the Marvel sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the second time Carter won in this category; the first time was in 2018 for the original “Black Panther” movie. In addition to her groundbreaking work in costume design, Carter's success is a testament to the power of historically Black colleges and universities like Hampton, which has educated and empowered Black Americans for over a century.

Ruth E. Carter's early life played an important role in shaping her career and achievements. She was born on April 10, 1960, in Springfield, Massachusetts, and grew up in a single-parent household. Carter attended Hampton University, where she studied theater and received her Bachelor of Arts degree. After starting to pursue a career as an actress, Carter discovered her passion for costume design, and she began her career in the field shortly after graduating. Carter's early life experiences and education instilled in her a strong work ethic and a determination to succeed, which undoubtedly contributed to her success as a costume designer and her historic achievement as the first Black woman to win two Oscars.
