What Makes an HBCU?

Historically Black Colleges and Universities, colloquially referred to as HBCUs, stand as a source of tremendous accomplishment and immense pride within the African American community and indeed, the entire nation. These institutions have played a vital role in shaping the educational landscape of the United States. According to the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, HBCUs are officially defined as follows: "Any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose primary mission has been and continues to be the education of Black Americans, and which is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association recognized by the Secretary of Education as a dependable authority on the quality of education provided or is, by such an agency or association's judgment, making significant strides toward accreditation."

But HBCUs are not just about history; they represent a vibrant and dynamic present. These institutions open their doors to students of all races, offering everyone an opportunity to cultivate their skills and talents. Graduates of HBCUs go on to make impactful contributions in various fields, serving domestically and internationally, whether as entrepreneurs or in the public and private sectors. So, let's delve deeper into some information about a very special HBCU, Morgan State Univeristy.

Name Changes Reflect Growth

Morgan State University has experienced a transformative journey, marked by significant name changes and institutional development. It began as the Centenary Biblical Institute in 1867, founded to train young men in ministry. However, in 1890, the institution was renamed Morgan College in honor of Reverend Lyttleton Morgan, the first chairman of its Board of Trustees, who generously donated land to the college. This marked the beginning of a legacy that would impact generations of students.

Andrew Carnegie's Contribution

The year 1915 was pivotal for Morgan College, thanks to a generous grant from Andrew Carnegie. He provided $50,000 for the construction of the central academic building, under the condition that the college would purchase a new site, settle all outstanding obligations, and name the building in his honor. This grant led to the institution's relocation to its present site in northeast Baltimore in 1917, with the iconic Carnegie Hall erected two years later.

Transition to Public Institution

In 1939, Morgan College transitioned from being a private institution to a publicly owned university. This historic move was in response to a state study that recognized the need to provide more educational opportunities for Maryland's black citizens. This transition opened the doors to students of all races, reflecting Morgan's commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

University Status and Expansion

Morgan's journey continued to evolve, and in 1975, it achieved university status, granting it the authority to offer doctoral programs and its own governing board. As part of a broader higher education restructuring in Maryland in 1988, Morgan's authority to offer advanced programs was strengthened, and it was officially designated as Maryland's Public Urban University. Recently, Morgan State University has experienced remarkable growth, achieving a record-breaking enrollment of 9,808 students, with an 8 percent increase in the latest academic year. This marks the third consecutive year of record enrollment growth for the university.
